ECU Health has appointed Brian Dunn, CPA, as chief financial officer, effective immediately. Dunn will oversee the health system’s Finance and Supply Chain departments, as well as related financial responsibilities for East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine. His promotion follows the departure of former CFO Andy Zukowski.
Key takeaways
ECU Health’s leadership change places a longtime internal executive at the center of its financial strategy.
Dunn will lead Finance and Supply Chain operations for ECU Health and the Brody School of Medicine.
He has worked with ECU Health since 2011 and most recently served as senior vice president of Finance.
His responsibilities include supporting financial integration under the organizations’ joint operating agreement.
The appointment comes as ECU Health continues to focus on growth, efficiency and regional patient care.
Dunn brings more than 15 years of health care finance experience
Dunn joined ECU Health in 2011 after spending more than a decade at RSM, a major accounting and advisory firm. His background includes accounting, auditing and financial reporting for health care, government and nonprofit organizations.
At ECU Health, he most recently led corporate accounting and financial reporting, financial planning and analytics, treasury services, reimbursement and cost reporting, and strategic financial and capital planning. That experience gives him broad exposure to the financial functions involved in operating a large health system.
CFO role will support long-term financial planning
In announcing the appointment, ECU Health CEO and Brody School of Medicine Dean Dr. Michael Waldrum credited Dunn with helping strengthen the organization’s financial position. His work has also supported strategic investments, revenue growth, reimbursement optimization, cost reduction and longer-term planning.
These priorities are relevant across the health care sector. For smaller home health, hospice, home care and wound care operators, accurate bookkeeping, reimbursement analysis, payroll controls and cost reporting are also essential to maintaining financial stability. Specialized accounting support, including fractional CFO services, can help organizations address those needs without building a full in-house finance department.
Joint operating agreement adds to Dunn’s responsibilities
Dunn will also help advance the financial integration goals of ECU Health and the Brody School of Medicine. The organizations describe the arrangement as a shared-services model intended to improve efficiency, strengthen academic medicine and support patient care throughout the region.
His responsibilities will therefore extend beyond traditional health system accounting. Coordinating financial processes across clinical, academic and supply-chain operations can require consistent reporting, disciplined planning and clear accountability—areas that are also important for independent health care providers managing multiple service lines.
Leadership continuity for ECU Health
Waldrum said Dunn’s familiarity with ECU Health and its mission will provide continuity as the organization moves forward. Dunn earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from East Carolina University and said serving rural communities has been central to his career.
The appointment gives ECU Health a CFO with institutional knowledge and experience across core financial operations. For providers across the health care industry, the transition underscores the importance of finance leaders who can connect accounting, reimbursement, operational efficiency and patient-care priorities.
